I would say in 100% of cases a careful choice of mods can improve a game immeasurably. When i find i game that i really enjoy, but maybe have a few reservations about in certain places, i turn to checking out the modding scene for it to see what i can contribute or where the modders have managed to take it, especially as many games get a little 'rushed' out the door, and the extra TLC (rather than DLC!) the modding community can provide can be the difference between my playing a game for years, or just a few weeks. That theme still holds true today for me. It was my first taste of what modding can do to a game, and in the case of CTPII it was all about fixing and improving the game where the devs had left it at. I helped with some of the mods for it over the years (mostly just idea brain-storming), from Apolyton Pack to Ages of Man, and out of that some of those guys went on to work on the Beyond The Sword expansion for Civ IV. It also had poor AI and bugs all over (even after official patching ceased). Maybe the first use of 'religion' as a civilization manipulation tool? Still it had 'something' maybe the clever (and still nearly unique to the genre) combat mechanic (no Stacks of Doom here)? Maybe the surprisingly detailed trade route model (that could be 'attacked' to enact a trade war of sorts).

Then Civ III came out and was a bit 'mixed' perhaps? It certainly seemed to not carry on the 'awesome' that CivII had been over Civ, so i moved onto to Call To Power II while trying to decide where my 'civ' loyalties should be.ĬTPII was a fantastic mess of a historic 4x tbs. Forget the 'brand' disloyalty for a moment As a huge Civ fan in general since i discovered it in the 90's, CTP was the game i picked up while waiting for Civ III. Modding has pretty much become an essential part of my enjoyment of games and for me it all started back in the early 2000's with the game Call To Power.
